Masters Swimming Showcases Age Doesn't Matter
DYK that Masters swimming has a broad spectrum of athletes? As we approach the Olympics and watch our younger elite athletes break world records, it’s easy to forget (or even be unaware of completely) that people of all ages and skill sets participate in Masters programs. In swimming, Masters athletes range from age 18-98! Cindy Ong, a 37 year old mother of three from Malaysia is working towards her goal of breaking a record at the 2021 World Masters Championships (postponed until 2022). After a 10 year hiatus from swimming, she began training in 2017 and two years later won 5 gold medals in 2019.
On the other end of the age spectrum, 98 year old Chicago native, Charlotte Sandall, holds 10 national records and a FINA record in the 95-99 age group bracket in the 200 IM! There are so many people in between from former high school athletes to Olympic gold medalists like Matt Grevers who swam in the same Masters meet as a 97 year old woman in 2019 and broke a 50 yard Backstroke record. Just goes to show, it’s never too late to learn how to swim and compete! If you didn’t know, WILD has a masters program! Interested in learning more? Contact Coach Kate!
