Celebrating MLK
DYK That Martin Luther King Jr. lived in the Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago in 1966?
King moved to Chicago to work on the Chicago Freedom Movement, a campaign to expand civil rights activities from the south to north. He moved into an apartment on the west side in Lawndale to raise awareness of poor living conditions in black neighborhoods. Out of this movement there were two major marches in July and August that brought about an agreement with Mayor Daley to open up housing opportunities. Dr. King, other activists, community members and his followers wanted to see change in Chicago, so he moved his family, organized, took to the streets and negotiated with others. While most think of MLK Day as a day off, many others consider it a “day on”. A day to commit to change through volunteering or charity work. If you spent yesterday as a “day on”, I'd love to hear about it (shoot me an email!). In honor of MLK Day (yesterday, Monday January 18th), take a moment to answer this question - What was the last thing YOU did to create the change you want to see in your community?
If you’d like to know how you can directly impact change in your swimming community, send me an email [email protected].
